Dr. Luis J. Barata

Luis J. Barata, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, brings a unique blend of medical and nursing expertise to his work as a family nurse practitioner and clinical researcher. Trained first as a physician in Havana and Santiago, Chile, and later as a Family Nurse Practitioner in Miami, he has built his career on a foundation of compassionate care, lifelong learning, and dedication to improving patient outcomes. His dual background allows him to connect with patients on a personal level while applying a broad range of clinical knowledge to guide their care.

Over the past two decades, Luis has cared for patients across many settings, from primary care clinics and home health to hospice and specialty medicine. He has held leadership roles such as Director of Nursing, worked in major health systems like Lee Memorial, and now serves patients in Southwest Florida through Riverside Family & Lifestyle Medicine, Allied Medical of SW Florida, and other practices. His experience extends internationally as well, having served as a physician and medical director in family medicine and dialysis centers in Chile and Cuba.

In addition to his clinical work, Luis is actively involved in advancing medicine through research. As a Sub-Investigator with Riverside Research Group, he contributes to clinical trials in areas such as asthma, COPD, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s. He is board-certified in Lifestyle Medicine, emphasizing prevention and wellness alongside treatment. Fluent in both English and Spanish, and a proud member of organizations including the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, Luis remains committed to providing whole-person care while helping bring new therapies to the patients who need them most. Dr. Barata has been a valued member of ARHI’s distinguished team of investigators since 2019.
